Joanna (sometimes called Joan) is the cook at Kirrin Cottage. She is nice to George and to her cousins when they stay, and makes cakes for them. She sometimes looks after them when Quentin and Fanny go away.
She was hired by the Kirrins once they gained a lot of money from treasure on Kirrin Island. The Famous Five met her for the first time when they came home from boarding school one Christmas.[1]
She has a cousin who lives in another village, who fosters Jo. Joanna knew her cousin wanted a ragamuffin girl to look after, so she suggested Jo could move in with her cousin after Jo's father Simmy went to prison.[2]
